"but at a lower pace". Sure..., watched it in two days (10 eps the first day, and the left 15 the following). It was just too addictive to rationalize it. Code Geass has entered to my selective "Favorites" list. I've just finished watching Code Geass R2, and the ending has shocked me.
While different, it has surpassed Eureka Seven in my preference for mechas (I never liked mechas until Eureka Seven).
The show was different from the prequel "Code Geass". The first one was going in one direction, and "R2" did a very big turn (175°) but it conserved its essence. The plot was much more twisted and the story went into a rush, the storyline advanced very fast; but Zero was the same as before, and the battles much more entertaining.
[All that follows are spoilers]
There were less character development (all where introduced in the first series, and R2 hadn't any significant new characters), and some dramas (Shirley's death was shocking, but no so much like when she was Geass'ed).
What was really good was the ending. I wasn't expecting it at all. Never crossed my mind. I was hoping Lelouch to be happy, to live again with his sister. I also wanted some romance between Lelouch and C.C., but that was not going to happen ^^. I'd never wanted Nunally to be a commander, that dissapointed me :S. I thought of Lelouch as a hero, but in the end, he was a hero, but unrecognized. He was the villain to everyone, only Kallen, Suzaku, and Nunally knew the truth, that what Lelouch did, even if questionable, was heroic and brilliant: Lelouch took the place of a villian to gain all the people's hate onto him, and then ordered Suzaku to take Zero's place and kill him, so Zero will reborn as the true hero and the culprit of all death.
But the best part was that the ending was in fact and open ending. No one can say for sure if Lelouch is alive or not, there are different theories about:
*I the end, C.C. is over a wagon and talks about the Geass, but addressing to Lelouch, so, was the wagon driver, Lelouch? She may be talking to the death, very usual in anime.
*The series title is R2, that would be RR. As CC, or VV, that could mean that Lelouch got the full Geass code and he was inmortal, hence he can't die.
*But if so, Suzaku said "I accept the Geass", it could refer metaphorically about Lelouch's comparison between Geass and wishes, or in fact about a real contract between RR and Suzaku, meaning that Suzaku gained a Geass and that Lelouch death was real.
*Orange smiled when Suzaku-Zero advanced towards Lelouch. I don't think Lelouch would disclose his plans to him and expect Orange to take it so easily. So maybe he knows that Lelouch is inmortal.
I still didn't get to whole thing about the Geass code and sigil. The only thing I know is that Charles took VV sigil and he turned inmortal. If Lelouch tooked C.C. code, and turned into R.R., that could turn him inmortal....
What I believe, is based on the final scene. I don't know if C.C. was addressing to Lelouch (the wagon driver), but I know that C.C. wouldn't let Lelouch die without fulfilling her wish. It doesn't matter if she found love, or someone that loves her, she was tired of gathering experiences and wanted to die, even after knowing Lelouch. So the only way that she is so happy resting in there is that Lelouch took C.C. code and turned inmortal, thus C.C. returned to mortal and will die when she gets older. So in my opinion, Lelouch is alive, but resigned everything and will restarted a new life with C.C. A quite sad ending... I think that being alive but forgetting everything is worse than dying. I will post about it later, it's one of my "weak points" on dramas....
What is your theory about the ending?
